Jessie Halstrom shared the story of how a sweet senior Chihuahua named Duchess unexpectedly wandered into her life. It's a heartfelt reminder that sometimes the dogs we think we're rescuing end up rescuing us. We've lightly edited Jessie's story for length.
Supporting senior dog rescue has become one of my greatest passions since losing my soulmate dog, Bryce. After he passed, I began donating to Frosted Faces, a senior dog rescue in Southern California. Last Christmas, I finally had the chance to visit.
I signed up to foster any senior dog for two weeks—no plans to adopt, just hoping to give one dog a little extra love.
Instead, I met Duchess.
She was a deaf, fifteen-year-old Chihuahua. We shared a very quiet 45-minute drive home, occasionally glancing at each other, both wondering what came next.
It didn't take long to realize Duchess wasn't just a good dog—she was an incredibly sweet one. I spent days trying to convince friends, family, and strangers to adopt her because I was certain my husband, Wes, wouldn't agree to bringing home another animal. (To be fair, he's allergic...and we already had a dog, a cat, three horses, pigs, and about 30 ducks, chickens, and quail.)
Then, one week into our foster, Wes surprised me with a long, dramatic text saying I could adopt Duchess—complete with a list of terms. Once adoption became an option, there was no way I was taking her back.
Over the next few months, Duchess blossomed. Her affectionate personality emerged, and she proved to be a surprisingly funny little dog. She's completely different from the timid senior I first picked up.
Duchess reminded me of something every adopter should know: the dog you meet in a shelter is often meeting you on one of the hardest days of their life. Give them time, patience, and love, and you'll often discover an entirely different dog.
I think about how Duchess's worst day had already happened—being in a shelter after 15 years in a home—so every single day since has been her best day.
Now life looks like long walks to the river with one goofy husky mix and one old Chihuahua riding happily in a bag.
