That Big Sigh
Art by Anita Driessen
There are so many reasons we love our dogs.
Their companionship. Their unconditional love. The way they greet us like we've been gone for years—even if we only stepped outside for a minute.
And my favorite?
That big sigh.
You know the one.
That deep, contented sigh they let out right before they settle in for a nap.
It's the sound that says, "I'm safe. I'm comfortable. I'm home."
Of course, life with dogs isn't always picture-perfect. Actually...is it ever? My Labrador's obsession with food can get a little...much. If there's even one bite left on the counter, he somehow transforms into a mountain goat, climbing to impossible heights in the blink of an eye. I suppose that's all part of the charm. Or so I tell myself as I clean muddy paw prints off the counters.
Dogs have an incredible way of reminding us to slow down and appreciate life's simple moments. They don't care if your house is spotless, if you've had a rough day, or if you checked everything off your to-do list. They're simply happy to be with you.
You're their person. Not because you proved it. Not because you're rich or look a certain way. Just because you are.
And that kind of unconditional love is rare. Rare, rare, rare. Someone get me a tissue!
In return, they give us loyalty, laughter, comfort, and a love that asks for very little besides a little time, a little kindness, and a healthy life.
This month, we're celebrating every wonderful dog who makes our homes happier, fills our hearts, and reminds us every day what unconditional love looks like.
Here's to our best friends.
